Q.What is Oral Medicine & Radiology?
Oral Medicine & Radiology is concerned with diagnosis and medical management of diseases specific to the oral & maxillofacial structures, management of oral manifestations of systemic diseases, management of behavioral disorders, and dental treatment of medically compromised patients. It deals with the diagnostic intraoral and extraoral imaging of maxillofacial structures by both conventional and digital methods. It further includes Forensic Odontology and also promotes tobacco cessation.

Oral Medicine & Radiology is the Gateway to Dentistry. It provides high quality clinical diagnostic training for management of potentially malignant disorders and oral cancer, medical emergencies, training in tobacco cessation, chair side investigative procedures, Basic Life Support, and LASER, apart from general dentistry. It also provides exposure in forensic odontology, specialized training in diagnostic digital imaging.

Oral Medicine Specialist focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and management of diseases affecting oral & maxillofacial structures, management of oral manifestations of systemic diseases, behavioral disorders and dental treatment of medically compromised patients whereas General Medicine Specialist deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and management of diseases affecting the rest of the body.

Oral Radiologists deals with the diagnostic intraoral and extraoral imaging of maxillofacial structures which includes both conventional and digital imaging where as a General Radiologists deals with the imaging of the rest of the body with the same modalities.

The department of Oral Medicine & Radiology at Saraswati Dental College began in the year 1998 with the inception of the institute. Since then department has witnessed tremendous growth. The department focuses on innovations and dental research. The institute has multiple MoUs with institutes and organizations of national and international repute for student exchange programs, academic, and research collaborations. It strives to achieve high quality teaching and learning through train the trainee concept by highly experienced full time faculty members and professor emeritus of national acclaim.
A multitude of post graduates have passed from the department and are placed in private and government sectors both nationally as well as internationally. The department has made tremendous progress in academics and research, making its mark globally.

Some of the most common diseases that impact our oral health are dental caries, periodontal diseases, oral manifestation of systemic diseases and oral cancer.
The department is having a Tobacco Cessation Centre (TCC) where in Tobacco Cessation and Control is being practiced particularly with behavioral therapy and medication. Till date, approximately more than 14000 patients having tobacco-related habits (with or without lesions have been counselled.
Dental professional have a lot to contribute to forensic medicine as forensic odontology has become an integral part of forensic medicine. It plays a crucial role in identification of an individual, age and gender determination and monetary, social, criminal & marital disputes.
