The Department of Periodontology, dedicated to the mantra "Oral Health for Overall Health," is a specialized arm of dentistry centered on the study, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases impacting the supportive tissues of teeth and surrounding structures, including gums and bone. Saraswati Dental College & Hospital's Periodontology Department not only nurtures skilled professionals adept in addressing the intricacies of periodontal health but also spearheads innovation and progress in the field.
This well-equipped department operates as a specialized unit, proficient in managing advanced periodontal diseases and providing oral/periodontal care for systemic/critical care patients dealing with conditions like diabetes, heart and renal issues, pregnancy, cancer, etc. Leveraging LASERS and Micro-Surgical technology, the department goes beyond academic and patient care, actively engaging in research and innovations. This includes exploring novel techniques, technologies, and treatments that establish a vital link between oral health and overall well-being.
Over the past 25 years, the department has diligently screened and treated more than 10,00,000 patients, exemplifying its commitment to advancing periodontal care and contributing to the broader landscape of oral and overall health.
Thrust Areas of The Department:
1. Microsurgical Periodontology.
2. Reconstruction through Platelet Rich Fibrin(FRP).
3. Piezosurgery.
Q-What is Periodontology?
Periodontology is a specialized discipline of dentistry that deals with the health and disease of supporting tissues and surrounding structures (gums & bones). It also includes cosmetic periodontal procedures and dental implants.
Q-Why Periodontology?
Periodontal diseases are painless to start and generally present with bleeding and swollen gums, loose teeth, receding gums (longer teeth), persistent bad breath, pus discharge, and dentinal hypersensitivity along with pain, if not, treated on time, etc.
Periodontology offers a wide range of surgical and non-surgical treatments for controlling and eliminating periodontal diseases. This includes scaling and root planing, regenerative procedures, correction of anatomical conditions that may favor periodontal disease, impair esthetics (cosmetic periodontal procedures), or impede the placement of the correct prosthetic appliances (periodontal plastic surgeries) and placement of implants to replace lost teeth and improving the environment for their replacement and function.
Q-What is the difference between a Periodontist and a General Dentist?
Periodontists are trained experts to treat gum disease and provide services relating to the soft tissue and bone supporting your teeth and jaw. While a general dentist treats less serious periodontal cases (mostly gingivitis), and many will refer their patients to periodontists for the more challenging periodontal cases.
Q-What are the career options once one has become a Periodontist?
A certified periodontist can pursue as an expert in regenerative periodontics, periodontal plastic surgeries, oral implantology, peri-implant esthetic surgeries, periodontal cosmetic surgeries, and an important team member in interprofessional collaborative practice (ICP) for treating systemic diseases.
Description:
The Department was established in the year 1998 with an annual intake of 60 BDS students which was enhanced to 100 in 2004.
The department was upgraded for post graduate studies (MDS) in the year 2007 with yearly intake of 2 post graduate students. Till date 24 students have successfully completed their MDS and are doing remarkably well in the field of their specialization. Since its inception the department has been privileged to have the guidance of eminent Periodontist namely Dr. Parvati Malhotra, Dr. Flemingson Lezarus, Dr. Ranjana Mohan, Dr. G P Singh, Dr. Sudhir S Patil, and Dr. Rajesh Jhingran.
The department is well equipped with a specialized unit that deals with advanced periodontal diseases (e.g. bleeding gums, bad breath, mobile teeth, receding gums, swollen or enlarged gums, periodontal abscess, periodontitis or pyorrhea), partial edentulism (by dental implants)& oral/periodontal management of systemic/critical care patients (diabetes, heart& renal problems, pregnancy, cancer). UG & PG students are receiving extensive theoretical and clinical training in techniques including dental implants and LASER dentistry along with regeneration of lost periodontal structures and creation of aesthetics as a part of the curriculum.
A research article titled ‘Comparative evaluation of improvement in periodontal and glycemic health status of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients after scaling and root planing with or without adjunctive use of diode laser’ was published in Lasers Med Sci. 2021;36(6):1307-1315.
Dr. Akanksha Dubey, Lecturer in Department of Periodontology won 2nd Prize in Poster Competition (Faculty Section) held on topic ‘Diabetes Awareness in regard to Oral Health’ on the occasion of ‘World Diabetes Day’ 14 Nov 2021.

The department is involved in performing noble and innovative research as well as surgical & non-surgical treatment approaches for periodontal problems (bleeding gums, bad breath, mobile teeth, receding gums, swollen or enlarged gums, periodontal abscess, periodontitis or pyrrohea) thereby, improving the prognosis of teeth and their replacement.
Loss of interdental papilla predisposes to phonetic, functional, and esthetic problem. Surgical techniques are manifold, but are challenging and very unpredictable. Various treatment modalities are used in an attempt to achieve the reconstruction of IDP. The Department of Periodontology is consistently involved in researches including platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in papilla reconstruction.
The Department of Periodontology is involved in performing cases with Piezosurgery. PiezoSurgery is a relatively new technique for osteotomy and osteoplasty that utilizes ultrasonic vibration.
