The Department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics at Saraswati Dental College, established in 1998, is dedicated to the correction of malpositioned and malaligned teeth. Catering to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, the department employs a variety of methods, including Conventional Orthodontics, Lingual Orthodontics, Aligners, Surgical Orthodontics, as well as the use of implants and headgears.
These diverse approaches empower students to master various aspects and techniques within orthodontics. Over the years, the department has successfully treated thousands of patients. Notably, many of our postgraduates have gone on to contribute as academicians and clinicians in hospitals, not only in India but also abroad, including countries like UAE and Saudi Arabia. The department remains at the forefront of orthodontic education, leaving a lasting impact on both its students and the field of dentistry.
Thrust Areas of the Department:
1. Adult Orthodontics
2. Orthognathic Surgery
3. Digital Orthodontics
Q) What is Orthodontics?
It is the branch of dentistry that includes the study of the growth and development of the jaw and face particularly and the body generally, as influencing the position of the teeth; the study of the action and reaction of internal and external influences on the development and the prevention and correction of arrested and perverted development.
Q) Why Orthodontics?
The specialty of Orthodontics is inclusive in its approach to the problems of the head and neck region. At a first glance, it is simply the correction of mal-aligned teeth using braces. However, comprehensive treatment planning is at the core that helps achieve an esthetic harmony, a structural balance, and functional efficiency of the Oro-facial complex. The treatments included in the branch also bring about changes in the soft tissue envelope and correct Orthopaedic discrepancies.
Q) What are the differences between an Orthodontist and a General dentist?
A proficient general dentist is a Graduate trained to empirically diagnose a mal-occlusion. He is theoretically versed in the treatment possibilities in the case that presented to him. An Orthodontist however clinically trains for three years after Graduation to practically assess the cases, as well as elicit the cause of a malocclusion. They are capable of applying their knowledge of treatment mechanics to bring about the desired changes dentally and skeletally producing the desired result.
Q)What are the Career options once one has become an Orthodontist?
Orthodontics is a clinical speciality, upon completion of Post-Graduate training one can work as a Clinician in Private and Government Clinics, as well as the Dental departments at Hospitals and Medical Colleges. One can also become a Research Fellow of Craniofacial Fellowships. Orthodontists are an integral part of teams treating Cleft Palate cases. They are often involved in Multidisciplinary treatments for Obstructive Sleep Apnea, for Smile designing, and Orthognathic surgery besides routine clinical practice.
Description
The department is concerned with the growth and development of the dentition, occlusion, prevention, and correction of occlusal discrepancies. Individualized treatment plans are provided for every patient using Pre-adjusted appliances. Metal, ceramic and lingual brackets are deployed along with Temporary anchorage devices (Implants, bone screws, etc.).The Department provides treatment using aligners and inter-disciplinary Orthodontics.
