Natal Teeth: When Babies Are Born with Teeth
Most babies begin to develop their first teeth around six months of age. But sometimes, a baby may be born with a tooth already present in the mouth. These teeth are called natal teeth. Although they may look surprising, natal teeth are uncommon and are not always a cause for concern. Natal teeth are most commonly seen in the lower front region of the mouth. They may look similar to normal baby teeth, although they can sometimes be smaller, loose, or have an unusual shape. In many cases, these teeth are simply early-erupting primary teeth.
Parents may worry about feeding difficulties or whether the tooth needs to be removed. If the tooth is stable and does not cause any problems, it may simply be monitored by a pediatric dentist. However, if it is very loose, causing injury to the baby’s tongue, or interfering with feeding, the dentist may recommend appropriate treatment.
It is important not to try to remove or manage a natal tooth at home. A pediatric dentist can examine the tooth, assess its stability, and determine whether it is a normal primary tooth or requires further care. Early dental evaluation helps ensure that both the baby and the parents receive the right guidance and reassurance from the very beginning.
