If your child has just had a frenectomy to treat a tongue tie or lip tie, it’s completely normal to wonder what they can eat and how to keep them comfortable.
The good news is that your child can eat soon after the procedure. Since a frenectomy usually involves a small laser incision with minimal bleeding, recovery is quick. However, your child’s mouth may feel sore for about 24 hours, so choosing the right foods is important.
1. Go for Soft Foods
Soft foods are the safest option after any oral procedure. They are easy to chew and gentle on the healing area. You can give mashed potatoes, yogurt, oatmeal, scrambled eggs and well-cooked vegetables. For babies who have started solids, fruit or vegetable purees are a great choice.
2. Try Cold Foods for Relief
Cold foods can help reduce swelling and soothe discomfort. Offer chilled applesauce, smoothies, yogurt, fruit popsicles, or even a little ice cream. For infants, frozen breastmilk or formula pops can be very comforting.
3. Keep Your Child Hydrated
Fluids are just as important as food during recovery. Water, breastmilk, formula and mild juices like apple juice are good options. Avoid fizzy drinks and citrus juices for a few days as they can irritate the healing tissue.
4. Avoid Certain Foods
Stay away from hard, crunchy or spicy foods like chips, popcorn, nuts and raw vegetables. These can disturb healing and increase discomfort.
5. Maintain Oral Hygiene
Good oral care helps prevent infection. Older children should brush twice daily and may use saltwater rinses. For babies, gently clean the gums with a soft damp cloth.
6.Watch for Signs of Infection
Mild swelling and discomfort are normal but watch for increased pain, redness or swelling. If you notice these signs, contact your dentist promptly.
With the right care and diet, your child will heal quickly and comfortably.
