Why Does My Child Keep Getting Cavities Even Though We Brush?
You brush your child’s teeth every day, use fluoride toothpaste and still—another cavity appears. So, why does this keep happening? Tooth decay is not caused by brushing alone. Cavities develop when bacteria in the mouth use sugars from food and drinks to produce acids that gradually weaken the teeth. Frequent snacking, sugary drinks, sticky foods, poor brushing technique, deep grooves in the teeth, and inadequate fluoride exposure can all increase the risk of decay.
Some children may also be more prone to cavities because of enamel defects, previous dental decay, or other individual risk factors. Even teeth that look healthy can develop decay in areas that are difficult to clean.
Regular dental check-ups are important because a pediatric dentist can identify early signs of decay, assess your child’s individual cavity risk, and recommend preventive measures such as fluoride application, dental sealants, dietary guidance, or other appropriate care. If your child is getting cavities repeatedly despite good brushing, don’t assume you are doing something wrong. There may be an underlying risk factor that needs to be identified.
