TWO ROWS OF TEETH? DON'T PANIC!

Sometimes a permanent tooth begins erupting behind a baby tooth, creating the appearance of two rows of teeth. Parents may find this alarming, but it is fairly common.

Why Does It Happen?

• Permanent teeth may not erupt directly beneath primary teeth.
• A lower permanent front tooth may emerge slightly toward the tongue.
• This is sometimes popularly called “shark teeth.”

What Usually Happens?

• The deciduous tooth gradually becomes loose.
• It may fall out naturally.
• The permanent tooth can then move toward a more favourable position.

When Should You Visit a Pediatric Dentist?

• The deciduous tooth remains firmly attached.
• The permanent tooth continues to erupt significantly out of position.
• There is pain or swelling.
• Similar eruption problems occur repeatedly.

What Should Parents NOT Do?

• Do not forcibly pull out the baby tooth at home.
• Do not push or manipulate the permanent tooth.

Remember

Two rows of teeth do not always mean something is wrong.

A pediatric dentist can determine whether observation is enough or treatment is needed.
