Stages of Tooth Development in Children
![]() |
A child’s teeth develop through several stages, beginning even before birth and continuing into adolescence. Understanding these stages can help parents know what to expect and establish healthy oral-care habits at the right time.
1. Prenatal Tooth Development
Tooth development begins around the sixth week of pregnancy, when the first tooth buds start forming beneath the baby’s gums.
2. First Teeth Eruption: 6–10 Months
Start usually with the lower front teeth. Teething may cause sensitive gums, increased salivation and irritability.
Tips:
· Gently massage the gums with a clean, soft cloth or fingerbrush.
· Begin brushing as soon as the first tooth appears using a soft-bristled baby toothbrush.
3. Teething Period: 6 Months–3 Years
The remaining primary teeth gradually erupt. Incisors usually appear first, followed by canines and molars. By around age 3, most children have all 20 primary teeth.
Tips:
· Offer a clean, chilled teething ring or washcloth for comfort.
· Use a rice-grain amount toothpaste.
· Brush emerging teeth twice daily with an age-appropriate fluoride toothpaste.
4. Complete Primary Dentition: 3–6 Years
By age 3, most children have all 20 primary teeth, making it important to establish good brushing habits and regular dental visits.
Tips:
· Use a pea-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste.
· Encourage brushing twice a day with parental supervision.
5. Losing deciduous teeth: 6–12 Years
Around 6 years, children begin losing baby teeth as permanent teeth gradually replace them, usually starting with the lower front teeth.
Tips:
· Teach your child proper brushing and flossing techniques.
· Monitor the eruption of permanent teeth and consult a dentist if you notice unusual delays or positioning.
6. Permanent Teeth and Adolescence
During childhood and adolescence, permanent teeth, including premolars and molars, erupt. Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits help maintain healthy permanent teeth.
Conclusion
Tooth development begins before birth and continues through adolescence. Understanding these stages helps parents support healthy oral habits and identify dental concerns early.
