Early Signs of Gingivitis, Causes and Treatment Options
Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease, most commonly caused by plaque accumulation along the cervical line. It can cause red, swollen, tender or bleeding gums and may also lead to bad breath.
Gingivitis is usually reversible with early treatment and good oral hygiene. If left untreated, however, it may progress to periodontitis and affect the tissues and bone supporting the teeth.
What Causes Gingivitis?
The main cause is plaque, a layer of bacteria that forms on the teeth. When plaque is not removed properly, it irritates the gums and may eventually harden into tartar or calculus.
Other factors that can increase the risk include:
· Poor oral hygiene
· Dry mouth
· Certain medications and medical conditions
· Stress
· Poor nutrition
· Teeth grinding or clenching
Early Signs to Watch For
Common signs of gingivitis include:
· Red or swollen gums
· Bleeding while brushing or flossing
· Tender or sensitive gums
· Persistent bad breath
· Changes in the gumline
· Gum recession in some cases
Remember: Healthy gums generally should not bleed during routine brushing or flossing. Frequent bleeding should be evaluated by a dentist.
How Is Gingivitis Treated?
Treatment focuses on removing plaque and tartar and controlling inflammation. Depending on the condition, treatment may include:
· Professional dental cleaning to remove plaque and calculus
· Scaling and root planning for deposits below the cervical line
· Brushing twice daily with fluoridated toothpaste
· Flossing
· Antimicrobial mouthwash when recommended by a dentist
· Correction of dental restorations or other plaque-retaining areas
How Can You Prevent Gingivitis?
Good daily habits can help keep your gums healthy:
· Brush twice a day.
· Visit your dentist regularly.
· Drink enough water.
· Maintain a balanced diet.
· Do not ignore persistent bleeding, swelling, or bad breath.
