Fluoride and Healthy Smiles: A Parent’s Guide
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps strengthen tooth enamel and makes teeth more resistant to cavities. It also helps repair the early stages of tooth decay before a cavity develops. This is why fluoride is added to many toothpastes and is recommended by dental professionals worldwide. The concern about fluoride usually arises from excessive intake over a long period, especially in young children who swallow toothpaste instead of spitting it out. This may lead to dental fluorosis, a condition that can cause faint white streaks or spots on the permanent teeth. Fortunately, fluorosis is preventable by using the correct amount of fluoride toothpaste and supervising young children while brushing. For children below 3 years of age, a smear (rice grain-sized) amount of fluoride toothpaste is recommended. Children aged 3–6 years should use a pea-sized amount and be encouraged to spit out the toothpaste after brushing. Parents should always supervise brushing until the child develops good brushing habits.
Every child has a different risk of developing cavities. A pediatric dentist can assess your child’s oral health and recommend whether additional fluoride treatments, such as fluoride varnish, are needed. These professional applications are safe, painless, and highly effective in preventing tooth decay in children at high risk. Rather than fearing fluoride, parents should focus on its correct use. Combined with regular brushing, a balanced diet, and routine dental check-ups, fluoride plays a vital role in protecting your child’s smile from tooth decay.
