In observance of World No Tobacco Day 2026, Saraswati Dental College & Hospital (SDC&H), Lucknow, Tobacco Cessation Centre (TCC), Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, conducted a series of awareness-driven activities aimed at promoting tobacco cessation and strengthening public awareness regarding the harmful effects of tobacco use.
This year's World No Tobacco Day theme, “Unmasking the Appeal – Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction,” focuses on exposing the deceptive attractiveness of tobacco products, highlighting the addictive nature of nicotine, and encouraging preventive and cessation-oriented strategies for improved public health outcomes.
Recognizing the growing burden of tobacco-related diseases, the institution has undertaken a multi-dimensional approach involving undergraduate students, interns, postgraduate students, faculty members, patients, and the wider community. The activities are being conducted under the Capability Enhancement and Development Scheme (Professional and Human Values Development) of the institution.
Digital and Social Media Awareness Campaign
A structured awareness campaign was being conducted through institutional social media platforms to disseminate evidence-based information on tobacco-related harms. The campaign focused on:
l Health consequences of tobacco consumption.
l Inter-generational tobacco habits and behavioural influences.
l Role of healthcare professionals and interns in patient counselling.
l Success stories and patient testimonials demonstrating recovery following cessation.l Strategies for managing withdrawal symptoms.
l Protection of children and adolescents from tobacco industry influence.
l Dual-language (English and Hindi) motivational tobacco cessation messages.
l Awareness regarding tobacco-related systemic and reproductive health consequences.
The campaign aimed to reach a wider audience and strengthen community engagement through digital outreach.
To maximize public awareness, the institution extended its outreach through press releases and media engagement initiatives. These efforts were intended to promote evidence-based information on tobacco cessation and encourage community participation in tobacco control measures.
The Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology has consistently contributed to tobacco cessation efforts, having counselled approximately 21,000 patients to date, reflecting its commitment to preventive healthcare and public health promotion.
The World No Tobacco Day 2026 observance successfully reinforced awareness regarding the harmful effects of tobacco and the importance of cessation. Through sustained educational, clinical, and community outreach activities, Saraswati Dental College & Hospital continues to contribute actively toward building a healthier, tobacco-free future.
