Dental emergencies in children include conditions causing pain, trauma, bleeding or infection that require immediate dental intervention to prevent complications and preserve oral structures.
Common Situations:
- Severe tooth pain
Continuous or throbbing pain may indicate deep dental caries or pulp
involvement. Delay in treatment can lead to infection and abscess formation.
- Broken or fractured tooth
Trauma may expose dentin or pulp, causing pain and sensitivity. Early treatment
helps restore function and prevent infection.
- Bleeding gums
Persistent or excessive bleeding may result from trauma, infection or gingival
disease and requires prompt evaluation.
- Avulsed (knocked-out) tooth
This is a true emergency. Immediate action (keeping the tooth in milk and
visiting the dentist quickly) increases chances of successful reimplantation.
- Facial swelling
Swelling of face or jaw often indicates a spreading dental infection or abscess
and may be associated with fever and difficulty in eating.
- Tooth abscess
Infection of the pulp leads to pus formation, pain and swelling. If untreated,
infection can spread to surrounding tissues or systemically.
Early identification and prompt management of dental emergencies are essential to relieve pain, control infection and prevent long-term damage in children.
