Pulp therapy is a procedure performed to preserve a primary tooth when its pulp becomes inflamed or infected due to deep dental caries or trauma. Preserving the tooth is important until its natural exfoliation as it acts as a natural space maintainer.
Indications
- Deep caries reaching the pulp
- Traumatic pulp exposure
- Clinical symptoms such as:
- Persistent or throbbing pain
- Prolonged sensitivity to hot and cold
- Pain on chewing or biting
- Tooth discoloration
- Presence of infection or abscess formation
Rationale (Importance)
Preserving primary teeth is essential because they:
- Maintain space for eruption of permanent teeth
- Aid in proper chewing and nutrition
- Help in speech development
- Prevent space loss, malocclusion and infection spread
- Maintain surrounding bone and soft tissue health
Procedure (Pulpotomy/Pulpectomy)
- Local anesthesia is administered to ensure painless procedure.
- The infected coronal pulp or radicular pulp is removed.
- The pulp chamber is cleaned and disinfected.
- A medicament is placed in the pulp chamber or canals.
- The tooth is sealed and restored, usually with a stainless steel crown to provide strength and protection
Pulp therapy is a conservative and effective treatment that helps retain primary teeth, prevents infection and supports normal oral and facial development.
