A Parent’s Guide to Stubborn Baby Teeth: When to Worry and What to Do!!

Baby teeth usually fall out on their own to make way for permanent teeth. However, sometimes a baby tooth does not loosen or fall out on time. This is commonly known as a stubborn baby tooth and is often harmless.A baby tooth may stay longer if the permanent tooth is erupting in an unusual position or is delayed. Parents may notice a permanent tooth coming in behind or beside the baby tooth creating a “double tooth” appearance.
Parents should consult a dentist if the permanent tooth has erupted but the baby tooth remains firm, or if there is pain, swelling, or crowding. Early dental evaluation helps prevent alignment problems. Treatment may simply involve observation or in some cases removal of the retained baby tooth to allow proper eruption of the permanent tooth. With timely care, most children develop a healthy, well-aligned smile.
