Three Common Kid-Friendly Drinks That May Increase Cavity Risk

Cavities remain one of the most prevalent dental issues among children—yet they're largely preventable. The CDC reports that roughly half of kids aged 6 to 9 have experienced cavities in their baby or permanent teeth. Frequent exposure to certain beverages is another key factor.
1. Milk
Milk is undeniably a nutritious staple rich in calcium and vital for growing childrens. But many parents overlook that it also contains sugars. When a child sips milk continuously throughout the day (especially via a sippy cup), this prolonged sugar exposure can significantly elevate cavity risk .
2. Fruit Juice
Fruit juices like apple, cranberry, orange, or packaged drinks are often high in sugar, they can contribute to decay if consumed too frequently. Some families choose to dilute the juice to lower its sugar content.
3. Soda (and Similar Acidic Beverages)
Children may enjoy the fizz of a cold soda like Sprite or Pepsi. However, if a child sips soda regularly without giving saliva time to cleanse the sugars, decay can quickly follow. Dark-colored sodas may also lead to tooth staining. Energy drinks and other low-pH acidic beverages pose similar threats to oral health .
Prevention Tips
· Avoid giving sugary beverages like milk, juice, or soda in sippy cups near bedtime. This prolonged exposure increases cavity risk.
· Offer these drinks sparingly, rather than throughout the day.
· Encourage water between meals to help wash away sugars and harmful bacteria .
