Q- What is Oral & maxillofacial surgery?
A-“Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is the speciality of dentistry which includes the diagnosis, surgical and adjunctive treatment of diseases, injuries and defects involving both the functional and aesthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of oral and maxillofacial region.”
Q- Why Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery?
A- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a branch which serves as a bridge between dentistry and medicine. Post-graduate training focuses on enhancing learning through adequate clinical data which encompasses a wide range of procedures including exodontia, simple and advanced implantology, craniofacial trauma, oncology and reconstruction, TMJ surgeries, orthognathic and facial rejuvenation procedures. They are trained in management of post operative patients in the I.C.U. Peripheral postings in Casualty, Orthopedic, Oncology and Cleft surgeries further make them well equipped to deal with major surgery patients. DCI curriculum is followed for academic training. Under graduates are trained to perform exodontias and minor oral surgical procedures on patients. They also learn suturing and wiring techniques through simulation models.
Q- What are the differences between an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a general surgeon?
A- While General Surgeons are trained to perform surgeries of all body parts, Maxillofacial Surgeons are specialized in treating disorders of the Oral and Maxillofacial region. Maxillofacial surgeons have enormous expertise including the aesthetics and even a very big responsibility of dealing with face which is a sensitive complex structure of human body.
Q- What are the career options once one has become oral and maxillofacial surgeon?
A- Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons have vast range of career opportunities as academicians as well as clinicians in dental, medical colleges and hospitals, defence health centres, trauma centres, cancer hospitals and multispeciality hospitals. Cleft lip and palate as well as facial rejuvenation centres are also good career options for OMFS professionals. They can pursue fellowships in trauma, oncology, cleft lip and palate through AOMSI, FHNO and cleft centres to further hone their skills or can have their own private and consultation practices.

An emergency is medical condition demanding immediate treatment. Emergencies do occur in dental clinics hence, every dentist should have the basic knowledge to recognize, assess and manage a potentially life threatening situation until the patient can be transported to a medical facility.
The department boasts of conducting a well organized national level conference in July 2016 which was well attended by the P.Gs of our college and other colleges in Lucknow as well. The two day conference was graced by the presence of many stalwarts of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The post-graduates were immensely benefitted by their lectures and case discussions.

Facial Rejuvenation, the hypothetical reversal of the aging process, encompasses any cosmetic procedures, surgical or non-surgical, that restore a youthful appearance to the face.
Regenerative medicine is an emerging field of biotechnology that combines various aspects of medicine, cell and molecular biology, materials science and bioengineering in order to regenerate, repair and replace tissues. Since 1990s, the enormous use of the growth modulators and platelet concentrates in oral surgery has lead not only to the elimination of traumatic and degenerative diseases.
