White spots on a child’s teeth are a common finding and may indicate either dental fluorosis or early tooth decay. Dental fluorosis occurs due to excessive fluoride intake during tooth development and usually appears as faint white patches, often without any symptoms. In contrast, early caries presents as chalky white areas due to enamel demineralization and may progress into cavities if left untreated. Identifying the cause is important, as management differs. Fluorosis mainly requires control of fluoride exposure, while early caries needs improved oral hygiene, dietary changes and timely intervention.
Parents should ensure the use of a pea-sized amount of toothpaste and supervise brushing to prevent swallowing. Regular dental visits are essential for early diagnosis and proper guidance, helping maintain a child’s healthy smile.
