Early childhood is a crucial period for establishing healthy oral habits. Among the various risk factors affecting pediatric oral health, improper bottle-feeding practices are a major contributor to Early Childhood Caries (ECC), a largely preventable condition.Frequent exposure of teeth to milk, formula, or sweetened liquids provides a substrate for oral bacteria, leading to acid production and demineralization of tooth structure. The risk is significantly higher when children are put to sleep with a bottle, as reduced salivary flow during sleep allows liquids to pool around the teeth, promoting decay. The consequences of ECC extend beyond oral health. It can result in pain, infection, difficulty in eating, and may also affect the alignment of permanent teeth due to early loss of primary teeth. Preventive measures are simple yet effective. Parents should avoid nocturnal bottle feeding, limit sugary liquids, and encourage the transition to cup feeding at an appropriate age.
Furthermore, timely dental visits play a crucial role in early detection and guidance. The first dental visit is recommended within the first year of life, allowing the pediatric dentist to assess risk factors and provide anticipatory guidance.
