Tongue-Tie in Children: What Parents Should Know

Tongue-tie, medically known as ankyloglossia, is a condition in which the tissue connecting the tongue to the floor of the mouth is unusually short or tight, restricting tongue movement. In children, this may affect feeding, speech development, oral hygiene and in some cases, dentofacial growth. Early signs can include difficulty in breastfeeding, limited tongue mobility, speech articulation issues and challenges in maintaining oral cleanliness. A thorough clinical examination helps in accurate diagnosis.
Management depends on the severity of the condition and the child’s symptoms. Mild cases may only require observation, while more significant restrictions may benefit from simple surgical correction combined with speech or myofunctional therapy. Early diagnosis and timely intervention can greatly improve functional outcomes and overall oral health.
