TEETH GRINDING IN CHILDREN NORMAL?
Why do children grind their teeth?
Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, is quite common in children. It often happens as a response to tooth discomfort such as erupting or misaligned teeth and many children naturally outgrow the habit once their permanent teeth come in.
In some cases, grinding may be linked to stress or anxiety. Changes like school pressure, moving homes, or disruptions in routine can affect children more than we realize. Less commonly, bruxism may be associated with medications, hyperactivity, tongue-tie, or certain medical conditions.
Possible Effects of Teeth Grinding
For many children, teeth grinding causes no lasting problems and stops on its own. However, persistent grinding can lead to symptoms such as headaches, jaw or facial pain, chipped teeth, enamel wear, and tooth sensitivity.
Signs to Watch For
● Grinding sounds during sleep.
● Jaw soreness or difficulty chewing.
● Chipped or worn teeth.
● Changes in eating habits or behavior
When to See a Dentist?
Most children don’t need treatment, but if grinding continues or causes discomfort or tooth damage, a pediatric dentist can help. In some cases, a custom night guard may be recommended. If stress is the cause, talking with your child and helping them manage anxiety can make a big difference.
