HOW DOES A PACIFIER AFFECT THE DEVELOPMENT OF BABY TEETH
Pacifiers can be a great source of comfort for babies ,they soothe crying, reduce discomfort, and may even lower the risk of SIDS. For premature infants, they help shorten hospital stays and assist with bottle-feeding.
However, overuse can cause dental issues, such as misaligned teeth or changes in the mouth’s shape. The ADA advises limiting pacifier use after age two to avoid problems. Pacifiers can also increase the risk of ear infections and make breastfeeding harder if introduced too early.
To use pacifiers safely:
l Choose one-piece designs and keep them clean.
l Never dip them in sweet liquids.
l Watch how vigorously your child sucks.
Most children give up pacifiers between ages 2–4. If not, consult a pediatric dentist for guidance. With moderation and care, pacifiers can offer comfort—without harming your child’s smile.
