Are you anxious about your child’s sweet tooth?
Almost every second child in India has cavities, which if not prevented, can
lead to severe dental ailments and can even affect the overall development of
the child. When tooth is destroyed, it leads to cavities. This happens when bacteria in the form
of plaque react with sugary foods to form acids that eventually attack the tooth and erode it. Dental plaque is the sticky, slimy substance
made up mostly of germs which sticks to teeth.
It is developed frequently in kids’ teeth because of poor eating
and oral habits. Hence, cavities are more common among children. If your child
faces toothache, it is surely a symptom of having a
cavity. Ignoring the same can further lead to tooth loss.
Besides, environmental factors are also responsible for triggering risk for
cavities. It is important to protect both primary teeth, also called baby
teeth, and permanent teeth. If baby teeth get cavities, the permanent teeth,
once emerge, will also develop dental infections.
Although tooth decay is a serious, infectious, and transmissible disease that
can spread quickly and lead to infection without proper precautions, it is
preventable and treatable. The treatment of cavities involves different
methods, including dental sealant, fluoride varnishing, and dental filling. A
dental sealant protects teeth, especially when children are most susceptible to
having decay. It is less expensive than filling. Whereas fluoride varnish is a
thick liquid painted on the teeth with a small disposable brush, which
strengthens tooth enamel, preventing dental decay.
Dental plaque and cavity should not be ignored, especially in children, as they
can make oral health poorer. Apart from teaching children good oral habits like
brushing teeth regularly, preventing them from eating sweets, and feeding them
nutritious and balanced meals, it is vital to visit the dentist and get their cavities
checked.
