Odontogenic tumours contain a heterogeneous group of lesions that might resemble hamartomas with varying degrees of differentiation, whereas the rest are benign or malignant with variable aggressive behaviour and the potential to induce metastatic growth.
Odontogenic tumours originate from the odontogenic tissues or their remnants. Although the aetiology and pathogenesis of odontogenic tumours is unknown, it has been identified through various studies that a series of genetic and molecular alterations appear to promote the development and progression of these tumours.
The growth and progression of odontogenic tumors are affected by alterations of many genes and molecules. A better understanding of the underlying molecular mechanisms will help in predicting the course of odontogenic tumors and will lead to development of new therapeutic and molecular targeted treatment for odontogenic tumors.
