If you’re anything like me, you probably don’t give much thought to what kind of pillow you’re using. However, we all should pay a bit more attention to the types of pillows we’re using, since they affect our sleep pretty substantially. Your sleep can be particularly impacted by the type of pillow that you use if you experience acid reflux, have chronic reflux conditions, experience sleep apnea, or back pain. These conditions often require those who experience them to maintain particular sleeping positions to get quality rest. Enter the wedge pillow. In an interview with HuffPost, gastroenterologist and spokesperson for the American Gastroenterological Society Dr. Kristle Lynch, recommended the pillow specifically for people who experience acid reflux or who have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). We as Dental Sleep Medicine specialist are also trying to find out if wedge pillows have any role in maintaining airway patency in OSA patients. In a recent Sleepopolis article, AADSM President Dr. Kevin Postol commented on the effectiveness of trending wedge pillows on sleep apnea, stating "There is no research that states wedge pillows can help with sleep apnea." Still, there is a long way to go to find out the efficacy of wedge pillows.
