Dentists play a crucial role in tobacco control and cessation efforts as frontline healthcare providers. They are uniquely positioned to educate patients about the harmful effects of tobacco on oral health, provide personalized cessation counseling, and offer support throughout the quitting process. By integrating tobacco cessation services into routine dental care, dentists can significantly contribute to reducing tobacco use and improving overall health outcomes in their communities. Their advocacy for tobacco-free policies and collaboration with public health initiatives further amplify their impact in combating the tobacco epidemic. In other words, tobacco intervention should be included in general dentistry and must be viewed as an integral part of quality dental care. Considering the same, the Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology , Saraswati Dental College & Hospital organised a 7 hours Add-On Program from 13th March to 10th April 2024.
The aim of this Add-On Program was to empower the undergraduate students with the knowledge, skills, and resources and to integrate tobacco control strategies into their daily future practice. Through comprehensive education and training sessions, students are equipped with the knowledge of tobacco's health risks, effective cessation techniques, and counseling skills. It further hone their abilities in conducting tobacco cessation sessions by using motivational interviewing techniques. In clinical practice, students screen for tobacco use, offer brief interventions, and refer patients to specialized services. Advocating for a tobacco-free campus environment and collaborating with stakeholders ensure ongoing support and a culture of wellness. This holistic approach empowers students to actively engage in tobacco cessation efforts and promote healthier behaviors within their communities.
The lecture series started on a hybrid mode with both external and internal resource persons.
