The department of Public Health Dentistry began with the inception of the college and has since witnessed tremendous growth. The department works tirelessly to conduct several screening, diagnostic, educational and treatment camps in rural, urban and peri urban areas of the city. The department has many MOU’s with various government and NGO’s to improve the oral health and hygiene of the community at large.
The department has adopted 22 villages out of which 5 are under the umbrella of ‘Unnat Bharat Abhiyan’, Government of India and is constantly working towards their upliftment.
The department has adopted 5 Schools where it regularly conducts screening, diagnostic, educational and treatment camps for the benefit of the children.
The department has ties with UBA, Red cross, RSS and works in collaboration with these organizations to make oral health measures more accessible to all population groups.
Q. What is Public Health Dentistry?
Public Health Dentistry is that form of dental practice which serves the community as a patient rather than an individual. It is concerned with the dental health education of the public, with applied dental research and with the administration of group dental care programs as well as the prevention and control of dental diseases on a community basis.

Public health dentistry empowers not one patient but the community at large. It concentrates on the overall dental health needs of local, state and national communities in order to provide optimal oral health for all individuals, including patients with special needs and underserved populations. Public Health Dentistry emphasizes the environment, human behavior, lifestyle, medical care, encompasses dental health education, dental research and the administration of group dental care programs as factors affecting the prevention and control of dental diseases on a communal level.
Q. What is the difference between Public Health Dentistry and Public Health?
On a broader picture both promote the welfare of the entire population, ensures its security and protects it from the spread of infectious disease and environmental hazards, and help to ensure access to safe and quality care to benefit the population. Public Health Dentists perform all of these duties which are more specifically oriented towards the oral health and hygiene of individuals.

There are many career options available to candidates post their Masters in Public Health Dentistry. The candidates can opt for an academic position in any Dental College of the country, can work at government sectors (PHC, CHC, District Hospitals, Railways, UPSC, State PCS, Armed forces), can work as research assistants in various government organizations (ICMR, AIIMS, PGI), can run a successful private dental clinic/ hospital.

An MOU was signed between Saraswati Dental College and the NGO Jan Pragati to alleviate the services for those who are educationally and economically deprived among the Urban poor of Uttar Pradesh.
The Department of Pubic Health Dentistry conducted a screening, educational and diagnostic camp at NPD School, Barabanki.
Dr Ipshita Potlia successfully completed her Post Graduate Diploma in Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
Dr Pallavi Singh completed a course on Global Tobacco Control: Learning from the Experts.
Saraswati Dental College in collaboration with the Department of Public Health Dentistry is registered in Unnat Bharat Abhiyan. The aim of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan is to create awareness amongst rural population about their health and oral health.
