World Cancer Day was celebrated on 4th February 2019 in the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology with great zeal and enthusiasm by the interns, post graduate students and the faculty.
The Union for International Cancer Control, launched this year’s theme as “I Am and I Will.” Keeping this in mind, an educative and interactive program named “HUM JAGARUK HAIN” was organized in the department, in which the patients in the OPD were encouraged to share their knowledge about cancer and oral cancer, its prevention and its ill effects. To our surprise the patients participated with great interest and shared their knowledge regarding the same with us. They were further educated through audio visual means and educative materials. After the program, the patients were asked to give their feedbacks about it. During the program all the patients were encouraged to further share their knowledge with their family, friends, relatives and all other people associated with them, with the intention of spreading the awareness about cancer and oral cancer. The patient who did the best interaction was acknowledged with a token of appreciation by the department.
Along with this counseling and one to one interaction sessions with the patients were done emphasizing on awareness regarding risk factors, cessation, prevention, early detection and treatment of cancer by the interns, post graduate students and the faculty members.
Thus, the program was successful in achieving its motto, “Awareness is the first step”.
