Oral Physiology & Oral Histology

ABOUT

Dentistry is the science dealing with the prevention, intervention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of oral and maxillofacial region; malformations of the teeth, gums and oral cavity; removal, correction and replacement of decayed, damaged or lost parts of tooth including dental fillings, crowning of teeth, straightening of teeth and construction of artificial dentures.

The development of cognitive knowledge, motor skills and artistic sense in order to restore lost tooth structure as close as normal colour, shape and size of tooth, is fundamental for dental professionals. No aspect of dental school curriculum can give a greater meaning to a clinical procedure than understanding of basic sciences. Dentistry without basic sciences is only a craft; with good understanding of basic sciences, it is a learned profession and it lays the foundation on which daily clinical practice rests.

Dental Anatomy, Oral Physiology and Oral Histology is a component of basic Core sciences and is taught in the initial years of dental undergraduate curriculum.

The learning objectives of Dental Anatomy and Oral Physiology includes identifying Anatomical and Morphological characteristics of human primary and permanent teeth; identifying and reproducing the tooth surface details in order to recognize and diagnose anatomical changes and developing psychomotor skills for restoring teeth with proper form and function.

Oral Histology is a specialized part of General Histology pertaining to histology of teeth i.e. structure of enamel, dentin, pulp and so on and is taught at microscopic level. Along with lectures, discussions, interactive sessions and demonstrations, the students are taught the art of carving tooth on wax to interpret the anatomy of each tooth in order to foster active learning and critical thinking among students.
